The Wemyss Properties Story
Wemyss Properties is part of the Wemyss Development Company which has a broad range of commercial interests including property management, farming and food and drink.
The history of the company is a fascinating one and can be traced as far back as the fifteen century, when the Wemyss family was involved in the coal mining industry in Kirkcaldy and the surrounding areas of Fife. Over the years, the family built a strong reputation both for its technical expertise and for the high quality of the housing they provided for their miners. Today this can be seem in the homes built to form the village of Coaltown of Wemyss – a ground-breaking community that had close links with the world-famous Garden City Movement.
The Wemyss family’s coal mining business was incorporated in 1897 and developed into a substantial business, which included the creation of a railway line. At the time of nationalisation of the coal pits in the 1940’s, the business included the largest pit in Scotland. This success allowed the family to retain its longstanding interests in Fife and links to the region. Links that continue to this day.
Wine and Whisky
The nationalisation of coal mining allowed the family to explore new interests, which it did through the Wemyss Development Company. The first such venture was a tea company in Kenya. Today, the Sotik Tea Company continues to grow exceptional tea, which it supplies to the world market. Not content with this success, the Wemyss Development Company expanded into wine making in both the South of France and Western Australia. It also created a unique range of malt whiskies in Scotland and developed significant farming interests in Western Australia. Throughout the whole history of the Wemyss family and the Wemyss Development Company there has remained one consistent aspect: property. The company has long owned and managed a stock of residential housing in the Kirkcaldy area of Fife. In the new millennium, Wemyss Properties Ltd. expanded into house building, first through the extensive refurbishment of the properties it owned and then by moving on to new build and the sympathetic conversion of steading buildings.

At the heart of the company’s work is its commitment to deliver a high quality product that is unique and really special. This is achieved through a combination of careful site selection, expert design and the high quality of finish achieved by its builders and craftsmen.
Looking ahead, Wemyss Properties has exciting plans for continued growth. However, it will ensure that it retains the key business principles that have enabled it to endure for several decades: a business strategy carefully controlled by a small, responsive Board of highly experienced and knowledgeable directors, a limited exposure to debt and, most of all, an overriding passion for delivering high quality properties in carefully selected locations.
